HOW TO PROTECT AND MAINTAIN YOUR NEWLY FINISHED HARDWOOD FLOORS

Floor Maintenance Guide

  • ✓ 6 hours after a coat has been applied, you may walk on the floor/steps with socks only.
  • ✓ Please wait 72 hrs after the floors have been refinished before placing your furniture back (this is what is recommended) and 7 days before placing area rugs.
  • ✓ No heavy traffic or shoes on the floors/steps before 48hrs after they have been refinished.
  • ✓ It is recommended to wait 7 days for the finishing to fully cure before allowing pets (especially large dogs) on the floor/steps. It is also recommended to keep their nails maintained (it won’t prevent damage but it will help minimize it).
  • ✓ Place felt pads on furniture before placing it back on the newly finished floors.
  • ✓ It is highly recommended to place felts such as Flexi-Felt on chairs (because they are moved so often in a dragging motion). They can be found at stores such as Rona, Reno-Depot etc. or online.
  • ✓ When placing furniture back it is important to lift then place. Please do not drag the furniture back in place.
  • ✓ Use masonite board when placing appliances back.
  • ✓ Please be careful with office chairs that have wheels, it is recommended to use protection such as a special chair floor mat protector.
  • ✓ Please wait 7 days after your floors/steps have been refinished before cleaning them.
  • ✓ For the first month it is advisable to keep direct sunlight to a minimum, sunlight can cause the wood to shrink especially in the winter because the humidity is low.
  • Bona cleaning products and mops are highly recommended and sold at most major hardware stores or online. (Reno-Depot, Walmart, Rona etc.)
  • ✓ Do not wash or wet-mop the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent, or any other liquid cleaning material. This could cause swelling, warping, delamination and joint-line separation.
  • ✓ Do not use Mr. Clean Eraser on the floors.
  • ✓ Do not use steel wool, scouring powders or other abrasive cleaners, which can scratch or damage your floor’s finish.
  • ✓ Do not place/stick any kind of tape on the floors.
  • ✓ Immediately clean up and dry any liquid spilled on the floors.
  • ✓ Maintain a normal indoor relative humidity level between 35% and 55% throughout the year to minimize the natural expansion and contraction of wood.
  • ✓ Heating Season (Dry): A humidifier is recommended to prevent excess shrinkage due to low humidity levels.
  • ✓ Non-Heating Season (Wet): An air conditioner, dehumidifier or periodically turning on your heating system can maintain humidity during the summer months.
  • ✓ Using vacuums that are hard plastic can leave marks/scuffs/scratches on the floor, please use vacuum attachments with horsehair brush (or any soft brush that won't scratch) to avoid damage or marks on your hardwood floors.
